# Keep your existing business number

Running the company · Web app · 7 min read · Updated October 28, 2026

**Start on a temporary Twilio number, wait until your texting registration is approved, then port the business number customers already call into your main Twilio account and put it on the same Messaging Service.**

Texting and calls are part of the **Pro and Business plans**. This page is how
to keep the number your customers already call. Connecting Twilio and filing
the texting registration are in
[Text messages and consent](/docs/text-messages-and-consent). Taking the calls
is in [Calls and voicemail](/docs/calls-and-voicemail).

This is not a text-only move that leaves voice at your old phone carrier.
Twilio does not offer that to new customers, and those calls would never reach
BlastoClean. If you want texts and calls on the number customers already dial,
port the whole number.

BlastoClean does not buy this number for you. You use your own Twilio
**main** account, connected with API credentials, and Twilio bills you. This
page is not one-click Connect. A Messaging Service belongs to one Twilio
account. A number you port into your main account cannot join a Messaging
Service in the BlastoClean subaccount, so a registration approved there is
not the one this move keeps. If you already connected with one click, stop
and read the note in step 1.

## What you are doing

1. Text and take calls on a **temporary Twilio number** while the phone
   carriers approve your business texts.
2. Port your existing business number into Twilio.
3. Put that number on the **same Messaging Service**, in that **same main
account**, that already has the approved registration. You do not start a
   new registration for the swap.

Carrier approval for US business texts is that **registration** (A2P 10DLC),
after your business is registered. It is not a separate filing for each phone
number. Once it is approved, you add the number to the Messaging Service tied
to it. Twilio then registers that number on its own. It can send US texts
when Twilio shows that number as registered. Adding it to the service is not
enough, and porting does not replace the registration. The ported number also
does not keep the temporary number's text and call setup: you save Settings
again so texts and calls point at the ported number.

## 1. Connect Twilio and get a temporary number

Open **Settings** and go to **Texting & calls**. Choose **Use API
credentials instead** on your **main** Twilio account. You need the Account SID, the
Auth Token, and a local US number on that same account that can text and take
calls. Buy the temporary number there, not in a subaccount.

Do not start with **Connect with one click**. That temporary number, and the
Messaging Service BlastoClean creates for it, live in a BlastoClean
subaccount. A number ported into your main account cannot be added to that
service, and switching Settings over to main-account credentials does not
bring the approved registration with it. If you already connected with one
click, this page is the wrong procedure: the registration has to be filed
again on the main account, which is a new registration, not this swap.

Leave **Messaging Service SID** empty. BlastoClean puts the temporary number
in a Messaging Service of its own, on this main account.

Then open **Calls and voicemail** and choose **Save call settings**, so calls
to the temporary number ring the phone you choose. Send yourself a test text
and confirm the reply shows in Messages.

## 2. Get approved before you rely on US texts

Help with the texting registration is pending release. It does not change the
live service. Until that help is in Settings, file the same registration
yourself in the Twilio console, on the Messaging Service for this temporary
number. The buttons below are the ones
[Text messages and consent](/docs/text-messages-and-consent) describes for
when that help is available.

Under **Get approved for texting**:

1. Register your business once in your Twilio console, on this **same main**
account. Use **Low-Volume Standard** if the business has an EIN, or **Sole
Proprietor** if it does not. The legal name and EIN have to match exactly.
A Sole Proprietor registration is one number. Do not share a brand into a
   Connect subaccount for this move.
2. Choose **File my texting registration**. BlastoClean files it on the
Messaging Service it created for your temporary number, in this main
account. You can file the same registration yourself in the Twilio
   console, on that same service.

The carriers usually take 10 to 15 days. Until it shows **Approved**,
reminders stay on email. Send a real text from the temporary number once it
is approved, and confirm it arrives.

Do not delete a rejected registration and file a brand-new one just to start
over. Twilio can charge the review fee again, and it does for a new
registration. Change what Settings asks you to change and send it again.
BlastoClean asks you before it files a new one.

## 3. Port your existing number while the temporary number still works

In the Twilio console, open **Communications**, then **Numbers & senders**,
then **Port and host**, and start a full port into your **main** Twilio
account. Not into the Connect subaccount.

Twilio's current timing is **5 to 15 days**, and up to about 4 weeks if your
current carrier rejects the port. It is not instant.

Optional: at your current carrier, forward the old number to the temporary
Twilio number for the wait, so callers still reach you. That forward is your
carrier's setting, not a BlastoClean setting.

Keep texting and taking calls on the temporary number until the port is
finished (Twilio calls that the firm order commitment, or FOC).

## 4. After the port, use the same Messaging Service

The ported number is a new number inside the **same main** Twilio account. It
does not keep the temporary number's text or call setup. Do not create a
second Messaging Service or a second registration.

Putting the number on the approved Messaging Service does not mean it can
send yet. Twilio still registers that number on its own. Wait until Twilio
shows the ported number as **registered** before customer texts go out from
it, and before you release the temporary number. Texts and calls both follow
the saved **Sending number**. Leave that set to the temporary number during
the wait, so callers still reach the temporary line.
**Set up Twilio again** reads that saved number. It does not switch to the
ported line on its own. When the ported number is registered, save it in
**Sending number**, then choose **Set up Twilio again**, then **Save call
settings**.

**Low-Volume Standard.** The registration can hold the temporary number and
the ported number at the same time.

1. Add the ported number to the same Messaging Service. Leave the temporary
number in place, so US texts keep going out from it.
2. Wait until the ported number shows as registered.
3. In **Texting & calls**, save the ported number in **Sending number**, then
choose **Set up Twilio again**, then **Save call settings**. Do not run
setup again, and do not save calls, while the temporary number is still
   the saved sending number.
4. Send a test text from the ported number, reply STOP and then START once,
   and place a test call.
5. Then remove the temporary number from the Messaging Service and release it
   in Twilio.

**Sole Proprietor.** Only one number can be registered. The ported number
cannot register while the temporary number is still the registered sender.
US texts stop until the new number is registered.

1. Remove the temporary number from the Messaging Service first. Do not
release it from the account yet: calls can still reach it.
2. Add the ported number to that same Messaging Service.
3. Wait until the ported number shows as registered. Do not send a US test
   text before that.
4. Then save the ported number in **Sending number**, choose **Set up Twilio
again**, choose **Save call settings**, send the test text, reply STOP and
START once, and place a test call.
5. Release the temporary number in Twilio only after that test.

Turn off the carrier forward. The old number is now the Twilio number.

## What stays the same

Your BlastoClean company stays on this Twilio account (one Twilio account per
company). The Messaging Service that holds the approved registration stays.
The business registration stays. What changes is which phone number is in that
service, and the number your customers see.

## In one line

Main-account API credentials from the start, then a temporary Twilio number,
then an approved texting registration on that account, then a full port of
your existing number into that same main account, then that number on the
same Messaging Service, then wait until the ported number shows as registered
(Sole Proprietor: remove the temporary sender first), then save Texting and
Calls again in BlastoClean, then release the temporary number.
