Work out the profit

The numbers in the boxes are a starting example. Change them to your own. They are not a survey of what cleaning companies charge or pay.

What the customer pays for one job.

How many jobs like this you do in a month.

How many people are on the job.

Hours each person works on the job, not counting the drive. Decimals are fine, such as 1.5.

What you pay each person for an hour of work.

What you spend on supplies for one job.

Drive

Minutes to get there and back, for this job.

What one hour of this drive costs you. If the crew is paid while driving, put that in this rate. A starting example, not a standard rate.

How this number is worked out

  • You charge $150 for the job.
  • 2 people for 2 hours at $20 an hour is $80 of labor.
  • Supplies are $10.
  • The drive is 30 minutes. At $20 an hour, that drive costs $10.
  • Labor, supplies, and the drive add up to $100.
  • Profit on the job is $150 minus $100, which is $50.
  • 20 jobs a month comes to $1,000.
  • The margin is the profit divided by the price: $50 divided by $150 is 33.3%.

This is your numbers, added up in the browser. It is not a forecast, and it is not based on industry data.

How this profit is worked out

Take the price of the job. Subtract what you pay the crew, what you spend on supplies, and what the drive costs. What is left is the profit on that job. Multiply by the jobs you do in a month. Divide the job profit by the price to get the margin.

Labor is the crew size times the hours on the job times the pay per hour. The drive is separate. Count it in minutes and a cost per hour, or in miles and a cost per mile. Use whichever matches how you think about the trip. The starting numbers are only there so the page is not empty.

The starting example, written out
  • Price $150, and 20 jobs a month.
  • A crew of 2, 2 hours on the job, $20 an hour. That labor is $80.
  • Supplies of $10.
  • 30 minutes of driving at $20 an hour, which is $10. The miles boxes start at 10 miles and $1 a mile, and they are used only when you pick miles.

Questions

Is this my real profit?
It is the profit from the numbers you type, and nothing else. Tax, insurance, rent, ads, equipment, and your own pay (unless you put it in the hourly rate) are left out. Change the starting example before you trust the result.
How is the profit worked out?
Labor is the crew size times the hours on the job times the pay per hour. Add supplies for the job. Add the drive: minutes divided by 60, times the cost per hour, or miles times the cost per mile. Subtract those costs from the price. That is the profit per job. Multiply by jobs per month for the month. Divide the job profit by the price for the margin. If the price is $0, there is no margin.
Where do the numbers in the boxes come from?
They are a starting example so the page is not blank: price $150, 20 jobs a month, crew size 2, 2 hours on the job, $20 an hour, $10 of supplies, and 30 minutes of driving at $20 an hour. Switch to miles and the example is 10 miles at $1 a mile. None of these is a market rate or an industry average. Put in your own.
What is not included?
Tax, insurance, office rent, software, ads, equipment, and any pay you did not type. The drive cost is only the rate you enter. This page does not look up a mileage rate or a wage.
