Text messages and consent
Web app2 min readUpdated
Texting is opt-in per phone number, STOP opts a number out everywhere instantly, nothing is sent between 9pm and 8am in the visit’s own time zone, and the app checks a number is not a landline before texting it.
Text messages are part of the Pro and Business plans, and they behave the way the rules require rather than the way that would be convenient.
Consent, recorded properly
Opt-in is tracked per phone number, and there are three ways to get it:
- Recorded by the office
- Chosen by the customer online
- Given by the customer replying to a text
A STOP reply opts that number out everywhere, instantly. START opts it back in. Neither needs anyone in your office to do anything.
Quiet hours
Nothing is texted between 9pm and 8am in the visit's own time zone — not the office's, and not the server's. A reminder that falls due at 3am waits until 8am.
It is deferred, never dropped. The message still goes; it goes at an hour that will not wake somebody up.
No texts to landlines
Before texting a number, the app checks what kind of line it is, and says so right beside the phone field. You never pay for a message a landline would silently swallow, and you never wonder why a customer "never got the reminder".
Two channels that do not depend on each other
Reminders go out by email and, for customers who opted in, by text:
- A customer with no email address still gets texts.
- A customer who never opted in still gets email.
See Reminders and confirmations.
What can be sent by text
Quotes, reminders and confirmation requests, and payment links. Where a note runs longer than a message allows, it is trimmed and you are told — the quote number, the total and the link always arrive intact.
Replies
Inbound messages land in the customer's single conversation thread alongside emails, in the order they happened. On a plan with AI assists they are also labelled by what they are asking for. A person still answers them.
Did it send?
Every text is logged with its outcome, alongside every email. See Exporting your data.
